Risk Factors for Skin Cancer

Excessive Sun Exposure
Prolonged exposure to UV radiation is the leading cause of skin cancer.

Sunburn History
Blistering sunburns, particularly in childhood, increase the risk.

Tanning Beds
Artificial tanning significantly raises your chances of developing skin cancer.

Fair Skin
Those with lighter skin tones are at higher risk of UV damage.

Family or Personal History
A family history of skin cancer or previous skin cancers increases the risk.

Multiple or Atypical Moles
Many or irregular moles heighten the risk.
Skin Cancer Prevention Tips
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
- Avoiding tanning beds.
- Wearing protective clothing and seeking shade.
- Scheduling annual skin exams with our dermatologist in Shrewsbury.
How to Recognise Skin Cancer
The ABCDE rule—Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolving:
- Asymmetry: One half of the mole or spot doesn’t match the other.
- Border: Irregular or blurred edges.
- Colour: Varied shades within the same lesion.
- Diameter: Larger than 6mm (the pencil eraser size).
- Evolving: The mole or lesion changes in size, shape, or colour.
These can help identify potentially cancerous moles or lesions. If you notice these changes, consult our dermatology experts in Shrewsbury immediately.
